Currently, we are especially excited about a great program L.I.F.E. has coming up: The Young Doctors and Health Professionals Program. Read on to learn more about L.I.F.E. and this exciting initiative.
What Is L.I.F.E. Educational Services?
The mission of L.I.F.E. Educational Services Inc. is to develop programs that provide training and instruction for aspiring healthcare professionals, from childhood to adulthood. The organization focuses on fostering student excellence in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, and honing in on what disciplines participants might be interested in on their eventual career paths. Completion of, and excellence in high school, as well as preparation for college, are key components. The L.I.F.E. Educational Services acronym stands for “learning is for everyone,” and the organization strives to see this idea become a reality in the world.
What Is the Young Doctors and Health Professionals Program?
Young Doctors and Health Professionals is L.I.F.E.’s premier program. The aim of the 7-month intensive is to inspire young people between the 5th and the 7th grade to get interested in STEM practices, focusing particularly on underserved and minority communities. Students will be exposed to the field of healthcare by partnering with a Program Family Partner (or PFP), whom they will monitor to observe weight, blood pressure, sickness, medications, and eating and exercise habits. With the participation of a consenting family participant, students will use the data they collect to initiate discussions, educate themselves on the role of healthcare professionals, and examine how they can apply what they’ve learned in their own lives and communities.
Selected participants will be expected to:
- Attend classes and seminars;
- Attend a 4-week summer camp, where they will receive training preparing them to be community health ambassadors; and
- Give a presentation on what makes a healthy community at a local church or civic organization.
Interested participants should:
- Attend school regularly and have no history of disciplinary problems;
- Perform at or above average academically; and
- Have an aptitude and interest in STEM areas.
Applicants will be expected to provide two recommendation letters, one from a math or science teacher and one from a school counselor. The application deadline is November 30, 2018, and participation dates will run between January 12, 2019 and July 19, 2019.
